Regional Councillor

Serving Durham Region

Don has been part of the DURHAM community for over forty- five years and during this last term has worked tirelessly to make it a better place.  Improvements such as better roads for all, Scugog's fastest fibre optic internet and natural gas distribution are only a few.

Serving Kawartha Region Conservation

On the left is Don a Director at Kawartha Region Conservation   with Dr. Dianne Saxe the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario (ECO) reviewing his presentation on the benefits of Ontario's Greenbelt while also discussing possible solutions for the economical hardships and inequities it causes Durham's rural municipalities.

Over Taxation

Don knows the main objective in our near future is to make our taxation system fairer. In Scugog we don't receive our share of the Durham tax dollar, government grants and over pay for services which are sometimes nonexistant. He knows the value of being connected with the taxpayer and that's why he's running for the  position of Regional Council. Don's past successes show his ability to deal with all levels of government. He has assembled over 14 white paper presentations from greenbelt inequity to industrial taxation for presentation to regional, provincial and federal governments. Don has the ability to be able to make a  defined and focused effort against high taxation at the regional level.

Join our Crusade against High Taxes

Don wrote a presentation on our industrial lands and the disadvantages rural businesses have with industrial taxation far higher than neighbouring municipalities like York, City of Kawartha Lakes and Toronto with far less services like municipal water and sewage. These amenities are especially important in all food processing applications.

The Heritage and Museum Committee appreciated Don's assistance and his level of respect for the history of his community. He was very helpful when the committee set its goals and was committed to achieving the ideas put forth. Great strides were accomplished during the last four years, with the formulation of a grants programme. This program allowed heritage building owners the ability to apply for a partial grant, when restoring their building facades. In addition, in order to facilitate more historical tourism within the area, the documentation of thousands of heritage buildings within the heritage registry, including local cemeteries, was implemented. Don was also an important and staunch advocate for the restoration of the Curries Granary (The Old Mill) with his fourteen page presentation on future uses and fundraising ideas supplimenting the cost of renovations.

Local Interaction

During his term as councillor, Don Kett has been approachable and supportive when contacted by Unifor and the Great Blue Heron Casino. His continuing interactions and ability to communicate at the Provincial and Regional levels were instrumental in  our ability to protect the future of the employees we represent. Don has demonstrated a solid commitment to insure success within his community.
